Why does shard size vary so wildly?

Hi all,

I’m trying to determine why my shard size varies so wildly on different systems running InfluxDB.
We are collecting tags from PLC’s and storing them at identical rates without any changes, but my 24hr shards can be anywhere from 2.4GB to 600MB. I am constantly storing the same amount of REAL, DINT, and SINT tags, but see massive fluctuation in the size of the files. The reason this is a problem is because calculating how many days worth of data a customer can store is nearly impossible when there is so much variation. Anyone who can shed light on this?

Hello @Jamie_Jackson,
Welcome! Are you using 1.x?
Could be different generations of compaction. What do the TSM file names look like in terms of generations?
