Shards how it works

He everyone, could someone tell me how shards works? As I read on the doc and other topics, does shards correspond to .tsm files? If my retention policy is 7 days, does shards are .tsm files with timerange defined on 7 days so it could do one .tsm file per shard per shard group? It is not really clear, I need clarification.
